Bob Skinner, Skinner Ranches, Jordan Valley
“It is absolutely necessary that
producers are involved in the process from legislation
to regulation, from litigation to education.
We are 7 generations deep on the
same property in SE Oregon. I am the 5th
generation – currently 4 generations live on the ranch.
Land was settled in 1863 by my Great-Great- Grandfather.
He jumped ship in San Francisco and planned on coming to
gold strikes in Idaho…ended up in Jordan Valley as a
member of the first white settlers in the region.
There are many stories from old
times when the only form of transportation was horse –
progressed through stages of transportation and through
phases of most crude form of harvest and feeding to
current high tech-high volume machinery. We used to
hire large crews of men during haying – many of the same
men would show up year after year. There are especially
interesting stories of how everyone was in a survival
mode during the depression. Now 4 to 5 people cover
more ground putting up much more hay than the larger
crews did, in a shorter time frame.
Cattle are our main commodity.
Everything we do is related to our cattle. This ranch
has evolved into one of the recognized producers of
Natural Feeder Cattle. We have evolved into primarily a
red Angus cross herd and we primarily sell cows and
calves and feed cattle.
It is absolutely necessary that
producers are involved in the process from legislation
to regulation, from litigation to education. My dad was
President of the Oregon Cattlemen’s Association. I am a
past President of the Oregon Cattlemen’s Association and
am currently an Oregon delegate to National Public Lands
Council. We have all been involved in 4-H and FFA, from
my 88 year old father to one of my grandsons (9 years
old). Both organizations are great assets to agriculture
and to the participants.
What makes me passionate about Oregon? It is what I
call home. It is where my family has worked hard to
build and maintain a beautiful ranch. |
