“He raised wheat and each winter
he returned to Stayton and would tell everyone after
that he proofed up on the homestead they would not see
him in this “God Forsaken Country”. His 3rd
year at the homestead he hit a big wheat crop and stayed
there 42 years.”
My Dad, Ed Herrling, was born
December 4, 1891 in Stayton, Oregon. My Grandfather,
Franklin Herrling, who I was named after, had a sawmill
in Stayton. When Dad was growing up he had to grub the
stumps out to clear the fields for farming. In 1910 Dad
wanted to leave home so he took up a homestead near
Shaniko, Oregon. He picked the place because there
“wasn’t any trees or stumps to grub”. He raised wheat
and each winter he returned to Stayton and would tell
everyone that after he proofed up on the homestead they
would not see him in this “God Forsaken Country”. His 3rd
year at the homestead he hit a big wheat crop and stayed
there 42 years.
In 1952 Dad and his brother had
13,000 acres and raised wheat hay and had 2 bands of
sheep and a few head of cattle. They sold the ranch in
1952. In 1954, Dad and Mom bought out Mom’s brothers’
and sisters’ part of her folks farm in Shedd, Oregon,
the Sesquicentennial Farm. We farmed the place for a few
years raising Rye Grass Seed. |
